Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) for Children

At Birch Therapy, we are dedicated to supporting your child’s emotional and sensory well-being. We understand that sometimes, children need support that goes beyond traditional talk therapy. When a child’s nervous system is overwhelmed, they may struggle to feel calm, focused, or safe—even when they want to. This is where the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) can be a powerful, transformative tool. What is the Safe and Sound Protocol?

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a non-invasive, auditory intervention designed to help calm the nervous system. Developed based on Dr. Stephen Porges' Polyvagal Theory, it uses specially processed music to train the middle ear muscles. By gently "exercising" these muscles, the SSP helps retune the nervous system to better perceive human speech and filter out background noise. This shift helps move a child out of a state of "fight, flight, or freeze" and into a state of "rest, digest, and connect," where they can feel safe, calm, and ready to learn.

How It Can Help Your Child

The SSP is designed to help children who may be struggling with sensory processing, emotional regulation, or social engagement. By creating a sense of safety within the nervous system, many children experience improvements in:

  • Emotional Regulation: Increased ability to manage frustration, reduce outbursts, and soothe themselves when upset.

  • Sensory Processing: Improved tolerance for environmental stimuli, such as loud noises, bright lights, or certain textures.

  • Social Engagement: Greater comfort with social interactions, eye contact, and connecting with peers or family members.

  • Focus and Attention: A quieter, more regulated nervous system often leads to improved focus during daily activities and school.

  • Body Awareness: Better coordination and a deeper sense of grounding in their own body.

Is SSP Right for Your Family?

We often recommend the Safe and Sound Protocol as a supportive tool alongside our therapeutic services. It is particularly helpful for children who:

  • Show extreme reactions to their environment.

  • Find it difficult to regulate their emotions as the day progresses.

  • Are currently working on coping strategies but seem "stuck" in a state of high arousal or dysregulation.

At Birch Therapy, we believe in a holistic approach. By addressing the needs of the nervous system, your child may find it easier to engage with the coping strategies we work on in our sessions, creating a more effective path toward growth and healing.
