Meet Larry

SERVING CHILDREN AGES 3+, ADOLESCENTS, & ADULTS FOR INDIVIDUAL THERAPY, FAMILY, & PARENT SUPPORT

  • I am a husband, father of three, Neurodiverse (ADHD), Extroverted, and an Enneagram 2w1

  • I love to adventure and explore, and am a student of history and lore (both factual and fictional – I could just as equally engage in a chat about Ancient Greece or the American Revolution, as I could about Middle Earth or Thedas)

  • I am a consumer of all things media: I am an avid gamer, movie buff, sports fan, music enthusiast, and an motivated reader (when it is something my brain is passionate about, at least!)

  • I have experience serving people ranging in age from early childhood (age 3+), to older adulthood (ages 65+)

  • My primary areas of specialty are Neurodiversity (ADHD, Autism, Sensory Challenges, etc.), Anxiety, and Men’s Issues

  • From a foundation of Positive Psychology, I integrate a variety of evidence-based approaches, such as DBT, CBT, Gestalt, and SFBT.

  • I collaborate often with caregivers and schools, in order to support the entire system of care.

  • I have experience supporting many different types of families, including Foster/Adoptive families, families in the midst of divorce or separation, and split-households.

  • I strive to ensure my support is person-centered, trauma-informed, and culturally competent.

LARRY WRIGHT, LCSW

Larry has been a part of the social work and mental health fields since 2013. After graduating from Weatherford College with an Associate’s degree in Forensic Science, and from Tarleton State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Larry moved from Texas to North Carolina. It was here that Larry realized his true passion lay in supporting individuals, groups, and families in a more direct, therapeutic setting. Larry went on to receive his Master’s Degree in Social Work from North Carolina Central University in Durham. He has experience working in a variety of settings, including community-based therapy, systems coordination, non-profit organizations, foster care, and residential treatment facilities.

Larry’s specializes in assisting children, adolescents, and adults with trauma, intellectual/developmental disabilities, anxiety, depression, co-occurring disorders, relationship challenges, difficult family dynamics, and building self-regulation skills. Larry specializes in working with ADHD kiddos and leans into neurodivergent care. He believes in building a therapeutic environment that is collaborative, while supporting people to actualize their personal strengths and be their authentic selves. Larry utilizes a hybrid of therapeutic techniques such as Trauma-Informed Care, Expressive/Play Therapy, DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy), and Motivational Interviewing; all rooted in the core of Strengths-Based Therapy and Positive Psychology.

MY WHY

For me, this is a tale of two sides: what I always knew I was meant to do when I grew up, and what has always fascinated me.

Growing up, I knew exactly what I wanted to do (as cliché as it may be): help people. I never really knew how or why, but whatever I ended up doing, I knew that it needed to involve helping others. Watching Michael Jordan tear up my Phoenix Suns as a kid, I dreamed of the NBA. Sure, part of that dream was ‘the love of the game’, but the biggest motivation was watching players like David Robinson use their money and influence to give back to the world. If I made it big, I could help in that way too.

And what always fascinated me? It was the human brain: why we do what we do. As a kid with (what I eventually learned as an adult was) undiagnosed ADHD, I always wondered why I had certain tendencies and preferences. I always wondered why certain things in life were so incredibly easy and came naturally to me, while other aspects were so challenging. This, and my natural curiosity and drive to better understand how people function, drove me towards Forensic Science, Neuropsychology, and Criminal Psychology in the early parts of my college career.

Eventually, I put both of those pieces together, and here I am! Supporting others in gaining more understanding about their brains, and using that knowledge to help people navigate the many stressors and changes life often throws our direction.

While I also work with at-length with adults, at Birch I primarily work with children, adolescents, and young adults. Working with kids in this profession comes naturally to me as well, as for years I volunteered in supporting kids: whether through Church Youth Groups, coaching sports, helping at summer camps, mentoring. This career has provided me the opportunity to offer the support that I know I certainly could have used growing up, and that many young people today are seeking, in fully understanding who they are, and why they do the things that they do.
