Returning to therapeutic work after several beloved years as an elementary school social worker in Denver, Colorado

BRENNYN ROSENBERGER, LCSW

I come from a family of educators and counselors, so I grew up seeing how powerful it is when kids have an attuned adult in their lives- someone who truly sees them, understands them, and believes in them. That early exposure shaped the way I think about this work- not as “fixing” kids, but as supporting them in becoming more of who they already are.

In my work as an elementary school mental health provider, I’ve had the chance to support kids during such a formative time in their lives. I’ve seen how impactful early intervention can be, not just in helping with immediate challenges, but in giving kids tools and confidence that carry with them long-term.

At the core of my work is the belief that relationship is what creates change. When kids feel safe, connected, and understood, they’re more able to explore their feelings, take risks, and grow. I also believe that kids already have the tools they need within them; my role is to help them access those strengths in ways that feel empowering and authentic.

Kids are naturally curious, creative, and full of personality, and I feel really lucky to get to step into their worlds. I love creating a space where they can express themselves freely, build self-understanding, and celebrate what makes them uniquely them.

MY STYLE

In sessions, I take an active and engaged approach. I often use more directive play therapy methods, including Adlerian Play Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Play Therapy (CBPT), and Synergetic Play Therapy. This means I’m not just observing from the sidelines-I’m in the play with your child, helping guide activities in a way that supports emotional understanding, skill-building, and healthy coping in a natural, developmentally appropriate way.

My work is also informed by the AutPlay framework, which is designed to support neurodivergent children. This approach blends play, structure, and practical skill-building to help children grow in areas like emotional regulation, flexibility, social connection, and executive functioning, while always honoring who they are as individuals.

Alongside work with children, I partner with parents as they navigate school-based supports, including the IEP and 504 process. My experience as a school social worker helps me bridge home and school systems so families feel more informed, supported, and confident advocating for their child’s needs.

Above all, I believe therapy should feel safe, supportive, and tailored to each child. Some sessions may be playful and energetic, while others may be slower and more calming-it depends on what your child needs that day. My goal is to meet each child where they are and help them build confidence, skills, and a stronger sense of self along the way.
